What Welp stores, why, and how to get it removed. Short, because there isn't much.
When you run a speed test
- The location your browser reports. It is what ties a speed to a place. The exact coordinates are never shown; a spot's public page shows an approximate area.
- Network details: the name of your internet provider, and the city and country your IP address maps to. We keep a one-way hash of the IP address, not the address itself.
- Your browser's user-agent string, so the page can say whether a test came from a phone or a computer.
- The measurements. Tests are permanent by design: a record that could be pruned would not be worth trusting.
Running a test does not ask for your name or email, and Welp has no accounts.
When you run a connection check for an employer
A check link (an address starting with /c/) was created by an employer or agency who set the requirements. When you run it, everything above is stored, plus:
- The name you type, so they can match the result to your application. It is deleted 90 days after the test, automatically.
- Which check the test belongs to. The result appears on that employer's private results page and on a result page at an unguessable address that you may share too.
- The connection type (WiFi, cellular, cable) if your browser reports it. Most desktop browsers do not.
The employer sees your verified speeds, latency and jitter, whether they meet the requirements, your internet provider, whether the connection looks like a mobile carrier, your device type, the connection type if reported, and the city and country of your device and of your network, with a note if the two are far apart. They never see your exact location. The precise coordinates are kept only to make that comparison and are coarsened to about 500 m 90 days after the test, when your name is deleted. Welp acts on the employer's instructions in judging the result; questions about why a check was required go to them.
When you create a check
The company name, role and requirements you enter, and a hash of your results key. No account or IP address. If you give an email address to have your links sent to you, we send that one email, keep a copy of it (which contains your results link), and keep the address with the check; both are deleted 12 months later. We never use it for anything else. If you answer the optional price question on your results page, we store your answer, any note you type, and how many applicants the check had that month, with the check and nothing else.
When you send feedback
- Your message and the kind you picked.
- The page you were on and, on the test page, what stage the test had reached or the error it showed.
- Your browser's user-agent string.
- Your email address, only if you chose to give one. It is used to follow up on your message and for nothing else. It is deleted after 12 months.
Feedback is not linked to an IP address or to a test.
When you email us, or we email you
Mail to and from Welp is kept so we can answer it and keep a record of what we sent. Addresses and message text are deleted after 12 months; the date and subject stay. When Welp writes to a business, it uses the contact address that business publishes, writes once, and does not add anyone to a list.
What we don't do
- No advertising, no third-party analytics, no tracking cookies.
- Nothing is sold or shared. Feedback is read only by the team that builds Welp.
Third parties
Welp runs on Cloudflare, which processes every request and stores the database. Pages load a font from Google Fonts, and spot pages load map tiles from OpenStreetMap; both see your IP address when they do.
Getting something removed
Use the feedback form and say what you want removed: a spot, a test, or an email address you gave us. Include the spot's link and an email so we can confirm it is yours.
